„Esther Carp” is a project of an exhibition of the work of a Polish artist of Jewish origin, born in 1897 in Skierniewice, who became part of the history of École de Paris – a multinational creative community operating in the capital of France in the interwar period and in the years following World War II.
In the 1920s, she was associated with the Łódź avant-garde, gathered around the „Jung Yiddish” group. She then went to Paris to enjoy the wealth of the then world capital of art. She died alone in France in 1970 (in Créteil near Paris), and her work was forgotten. Today she and her work is being rediscovered, thanks to the passion of collectors and the gradual interest of art historians and museums.
In 2017, for the first time since the painter’s death, her works were presented in Poland – in Skierniewice, at an exhibition at the Chamber of History of Skierniewice. From March 2022 to December 2023, a show of her paintings took place at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme (Museum of Art and History of Judaism in Paris).
Our planned exhibition, from January 21 to April 7, 2024 at the Skierniewice Historical Museum, is the artist’s symbolic return to her family nest, to her sources. The Skierniewice Museum will host almost 80 works, representing a cross-section of her paintings. Such an extensive exhibition was made possible thanks to the courtesy of collectors, galleries and museums from Poland and France. Some of the works shown also come from the collections of the Skierniewice Historical Museum.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication, largely bilingual, Polish-French, containing texts on the life and work of Estera Karp and a catalog of all works shown at the exhibition, reproduced in color.
In the manner described above, the implemented project meets our goals, which were and are: research, documentation, popularization and dissemination of knowledge about the artist – both in France and Poland, thanks to the combined efforts of representatives of both environments.
The exhibition will be open until April 7, 2024.
